The question of the nature of secularity has become especially acute in recent decades, when it became obvious that religious factors retain great weight in the world and that, at the same time, mistrust of the secular language’s claim to universality is growing. Religious groups often express dissatisfaction with the quality of the mediating functions of secular discourse, which is rapidly losing its neutral character and acquiring features of partisanship. Supporters of the culture of secular modernity are also beginning to doubt the quality of the explanatory and predictive abilities of secular language. This situation pushes different sides of the debate to study the secular discourse of culture: what it is, when and how it arose, what forms and principles it acquired in the process of historical development in the West and in Russia, what does “post-secularity” mean and what prospects does it have. These are the questions that the presented study answers, consistently unfolding the philosophical-cultural and theological panorama of this process in historical retrospect, starting from the era of early Christian theological disputes and ending with discussions about the post-secular turn in the social sciences in the 21st century, showing the logic of the development of Western culture and demonstrating the essential differences from it to the culture of Orthodox Russia.
